CHINA. Shoppers are slowly returning to the Hainan duty free shops that had been forced to close for various extended periods during the COVID-19 outbreak centred in Sanya that began in early August.

Although numbers remain modest, local retailer sources are hopeful of a steady pick-up in coming weeks. The big question now is what sort of Golden Week holiday period – traditionally a sales bonanza – retailers will enjoy.

Today we present a special photo and video report from Hainan’s two key duty free locations, Sanya and Haikou, that show the encouraging sight of customers once again inside the stores that had been closed for so long.

Our special correspondent is in Haikou this weekend and took the photos below of the China Duty Free Group (CDFG) store in Mova Mall, Haikou. She also snapped some shots of CDFG’s Haikou International Duty Free Shopping Complex where finishing touches, including landscaping, are being applied in time for an anticipated late 2022 opening.

We also bring you a video and photos from Sanya, courtesy of our colleagues at New Hainan, part of our strategic partner in Hainan, Hainan Hinews Media Co.

As reported, CDFG reopened the Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex and CDF Mall in Haitang Bay on 21 September after a 47-day closure from 5 August. Fellow Sanya duty free retailers CNSC and Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex (HTDF) reopened on 16 September after being shuttered since 4 August.

The stores in Haikou run by GDF Plaza and CDFG in Mova Mall and by Shenzhen Duty-Free Group and DFS Group at Mission Hills closed only sporadically during the crisis.
