Shanghai Hongqiao Airport resumes international flight operations

CHINA. Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport has restarted passenger flights to Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions and to overseas destinations after three years of pandemic restrictions.

The airport’s 140 travel retail outlets including duty free shops and F&B outlets have also reopened to passengers.

The airport is expected to operate 314 flights a day on international, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan routes, adding 22 more compared to 2019.

Citing Hongqiao Airport Operation Headquarters Deputy General Manager, Tang Yiche, news agency Shine reported that there will be 56 flights to Japan, 56 to South Korea, 78 to Hong Kong, 72 to Macau and 52 to Taipei each day under the new roster.

Among the 11 airlines to resume operations at Terminal 1 are Shanghai Airlines, Air China, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong Airlines, Air Macau, China Airlines and EVA Air.

The two Shanghai travel hubs are expected to accommodate an estimated 2,225 flights per day, including 1,449 at Pudong Airport and 776 at Hongqiao Airport, restoring flight traffic to about 80% of the same period in 2019.

The two airports currently accommodate a total of 92 airlines flying to 79 destinations in 42 countries. They are expected to resume international flights to Boston, Munich, Milan, Jakarta, Bali and Jeju, among other international destinations. ✈
