Chilean Ministry of Defence calls tender for duty free shops at Santiago de Chile Airport

CHILE. The Ministry of Defence has published details of the eagerly anticipated duty free tender at Santiago Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport. The duty free contract is managed and overseen by government, with other concessions at the airport run by the Nuevo Pudahuel consortium.

The contract, which covers space at International Terminal 2, will run for up to 15 years (12 years with the option of a three-year extension). The stores are currently managed by Dufry.

The existing stores at T2, managed by Dufry, are due for expansion and upgrading once the tender process is complete

The space available to the partner spans around 11,000sq m in total, comprising stores in departures, arrivals and in piers C, D, E and F, plus substantial warehouse space.

Tender documents show that the duty free business had sales in 2019 of just under US$70 million; the highest sales in the past ten years occurred in 2017, with the figure reaching almost US$91 million. In the first 11 months of 2022, sales reached US$31.6 million.

The decision on a preferred bidder will be made on the basis of a combined technical and financial score, with the latter carrying 80% of the weighting.

The airport company continues to develop the airside areas in Terminal 2, with this Chile branded signage just after the Dufry store a popular point for travellers to snap photographs

The documents were published through official channels on 27 April. Candidate companies can visit the store from 21 to 24 days after publication of the documents. Queries about the tender will be accepted up to 49 days from publication of the documents with responses submitted within 70 days of publication.

Receipt of tender submissions falls 90 days from the tender publication date, currently scheduled as 26 July. Following a short evaluation period, a commission will make an award. ✈
