SOF Connect announces plans to expand and revamp Sofia Airport’s commercial offering

SOF Connect has launched a BGN450 million (US$270 million) tender for Sofia Airport Terminal 3 development and Terminal 2 modernisation, unlocking major growth in retail infrastructure

BULGARIA. Sofia International Airport operator SOF Connect is advancing projects to modernise and expand the travel hub’s existing commercial areas as part of its larger investment plans.

SOF Connect has kicked off a BGN450 million (US$270 million) tender for the design and construction of a third terminal and the modernisation of the airport’s existing Terminal 2. The tender foresees the development of a 60,000sq m T3, while the 72,000sq m T2 will be renovated to expand retail space and accommodate other facilities.

Yesterday (16 July), SOF Connect and SSP officially launched three food & beverage outlets in T2: Bar 09-27, Negroni and Upper Crust. The openings add to SSP’s existing portfolio at Sofia International, joining Starbucks and Camden food co. which debuted in Bulgaria earlier this year (click here for our full story).

“These openings complete the landmark transformation of the F&B area, which occupies a space of over 1,500sq m,” SOF Connect said in a statement.

“The three new F&B outlets cover an area of nearly 1,000sq m and have a total of 281 seats.”

Among the guests at the Starbucks opening earlier this year were (from left) SOF Connect Chief Commercial Officer Justinas Stepsys; Chargé d’Affaires and Interim US Ambassador to Bulgaria Susan Falatko; SOF Connect CEO Jesús Caballero; SSP Eastern Europe and Middle East Managing Director George Antoniou; and SSP Hungary and Bulgaria Area Manager Christos Orthodoxou

Meanwhile, in partnership with Avolta, SOF Connect recently launched two projects to enhance the passenger experience. Avolta will carry out a complete overhaul of its commercial areas in Terminal 1 and open a duty-free shop in the non-Schengen area of T2.

“The retail spaces in Terminal 1 will be transformed with the introduction of the walk-through concept, in line with best international practices. The area will be doubled in size to nearly 800sq m, featuring a new layout, expanded product categories and access for all departing passengers,” the airport said.

“A new duty-free shop will be created in the non-Schengen area of Terminal 2, covering 80sq m. The Last Minute shop will offer a premium selection of perfumes and cosmetics, alcohol, chocolate products and tobacco, as well as local food, wines, electronics and travel accessories.”

Avolta General Manager for Bulgaria Emil Georgiev commented, “The new commercial developments, including the expanded Terminal 1 retail space and the new Terminal 2 duty-free shop, are natural extensions of our commitment to delivering world-class retail environments and meeting the evolving needs of travellers.”

In April, Avolta opened an arrivals duty-free store in partnership with SOF Connect in Sofia International Airport Terminal 2. Click here for our full story.
