INTERNATIONAL. The Moodie Report is this month unveiling a major new project relating to airport websites – embracing all aeronautical and non-aeronautical activities.
In the coming days we will launch The Moodie 100 Airport Web Index, a detailed fortnightly analysis that will focus on two airport websites from differing regions. Each will be assessed under a rigorous 100 point system (The Moodie 100 Index), based on a series of criteria relating to consumer usage of the sites.
In the first pairing, Dubai International Airport will be matched up against Hong Kong International Airport. Next Singapore Changi will be paired up against London Heathrow, Vancouver International against Sydney Airport and so on.
Sites across different languages will be reviewed – The Moodie Report team includes English, French, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese speakers – and guest reviewers will be seconded as necessary.
The journalistic analysis will be combined with two other exciting developments. The Moodie Report Research & Analysis team is mounting the most comprehensive analysis to date of how airports are embracing the Internet, in terms of both aeronautical and non-aeronautical activities. The latter are generally badly under-developed in web terms, as shown in an earlier study conducted by The Moodie Report in 2006, which also saw Cathay Pacific Airways win the Travel Retail Website of the Year award.
The full research study will be published in February 2009, when The Moodie Report will host the first-ever Moodie 100 Airport Website Index Conference and Awards. It will include case studies from both inside and outside the airport sector as well as presentations from leading figures in the Internet world.
One speaker already confirmed is Airports Council International – The Moodie Report’s partner in The ACI Airport Business & Trinity Forum – which will deliver a major presentation on The Airport Wayfinder, a 3D animated video information guide which uses the latest Internet streaming video technologies to welcome and orient airline passengers to airports and adjoining regional and metropolitan areas.

The Moodie 100 Awards will culminate in the global Airport Website of the Year Award. There will be winners from each region, plus segmented awards for retail and other commercial activities, design, Sense of Place, and other aspects of airport web services.
The dates and venue for the event are currently being finalised and will be announced later this month.
The Moodie Report Publisher Martin Moodie said: “The launch of The Moodie 100 Airport Web Index is an exciting initiative and one that reflects the huge importance of the Internet to the airport world. We are convinced that much more can be done to exploit this incredible modern-day phenomenon as a communication tool, which is why we have mounted such an ambitious research, conference, awards and media project.
“We have been a pioneer of the web as a business-to-business media tool so this is a natural next step for us. From our beginnings in duty free retailing we have steadily broadended our coverage of all airport commercial and consumer services. We understand the Internet and its possibilities intimately and we believe this project can help the airport world embrace the web better, and in a more dynamic and interactive fashion.”
