UK. An employee of Alpha Retail Catering, part of Alpha Airports Group, has become the first airport bar person in the scheme’s history to be nominated for a Publican Award.
Pam Thomas is one of six finalists in the Bar Person of the Year category, one of the key awards in the nationwide scheme. She works at Manchester Airport’s Bar 08.
Launched in 1991, the awards are run by the pub trade’s leading industry title, The Publican. They are the most sought-after in the industry, attracting thousands of entries each year from the UK’s 60,000 public houses and bars.
Alpha Retail Catering Managing Director Jerry Robinson said: “Pam sets the standard for catering and bar staff everywhere, and epitomises Alpha’s attitude towards customer service. She sets the standard for our bar staff and her nomination is extremely well deserved.
“Crucially for us, this is also the first time that anyone working within an airport bar has been nominated for a Publican Award and that really reflects Alpha’s desire to bring high street values into the airport environment. Our philosophy is to provide the quality of service that people expect in wine bars, coffee shops and other high street retail catering outlets. Thanks to people like Pam, our vision has become reality.
“This nomination proves how far airport catering has come over recent years. We have consistently led that advancement and we will continue to do so in the coming months and years.”
Manchester Airport General Manager Retail Jane Barber said: “Customers regularly comment on the impeccable service that Pam provides. She is always prepared to go the extra mile to accommodate their needs. Thanks to Pam and her team, Bar 08 has the ambience and service standard of any good high street bar, which is exactly what we wanted to create.”
Award winners will be announced on 22 March 2005 at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London.
Thomas also recently won the Alpha Retail Catering Individual Award as part of the company’s ambitious Alpha Heroes programme. The airport and duty free industry’s largest staff recognition scheme, the Alpha Heroes programme rewards outstanding individual and team performance.
