Auckland sees continued decline in Japanese passenger numbers – 26/07/06

NEW ZEALAND. Auckland International Airport suffered a sharp fall in Japanese passengers during June, the major feature of its monthly passenger numbers announced today.

The airport handled 6,035 Japanese arrivals in the month, a fall of -20.9% year-on-year. That accelerates a sharp decline in Japanese numbers through New Zealand’s main gateway over the past 12 months, down -9.8% to 97,932 for the year from 1 July 2005 to 30 June 2006.

South Korean passenger numbers rose +13.7% in June to 6,264, welcome news amid an annual decline of -9.2%

More encouragingly in terms of the key travel retail consumer groups using the airport, South Korean passenger numbers rose +13.7% in the month to 6,264. That comes as welcome news amid an annual decline of -9.2% to 80,784.

Total international passengers (departures and arrivals) rose +0.3% for the month to 451,958 and increased by +1.3% for the year to 6,213,647.

For the year to June 2006, the core NZ and Australian markets have grown +2.3% and +1.9%, respectively, supported by strong growth from China (including Hong Kong), up +8.1% to 112,863 and India, up by +11.3% to 17,466. Singaporean passengers decreased by -8.5% to 23,113.

American visitors rose by +4.0% for the year to 180,174 and those from the UK and Ireland were down by -2.5% to 257,152 (including a whopping fall of -52.8% in June to 9,137).
