Brazilian airport revenues grow in difficult times

BRAZIL. Results just out from Brazilian airports authority INFRAERO show passenger traffic down -8.2% but commercial income up +14.5% in January and February 2003. Aircraft movements in the period also fell -7.3%.

INFRAERO said in a statement that revenue growth exceeded the corporate goal of +8% set for this year. Productivity also increased as the figure for commercial income per passenger increased significantly in local currency values from BRL4.43 (US$1.48) to BRL5.53 (US$1.84).

INFRAERO commercial director Fernando Almeida said the growth in commercial income was the result of an increase in the number of commercial areas granted in the airports, due to recent openings, and increased promotion activities by retailers in the recent holiday period.

Meanwhile preventative measures against the spread of SARS have reached as far as Brazil. In the majority of its international airports, INFRAERO has introduced a poster campaign and a public awareness campaign by public address system in three languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese.
