Brisbane Airport receives strong interest in duty free contract

AUSTRALIA. Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) has reported a strong response from experienced duty free retailers with expressions of interest (EOIs) for its new seven-year duty free contract – part of a major redevelopment of its International Terminal.

The EOI process has resulted in five parties, both Australian and international operators, progressing to the request for proposal (RFP) phase.

BAC General Manager Terminal Retail and Commercial Andrew Brodie said he was extremely pleased with the response received and expects the selection process to be extremely difficult.

“It has been over 15 years since Brisbane Airport last offered the duty free concession to the market, so it’s inevitable that it will be very competitive between the five interested parties.

“The quality of submissions received from experienced national and international duty free operators is a testament to the fact opportunities like this are extremely rare, and this is a unique long-term prospect for the successful retailer within a leading airport environment.

“The RFP will allow us carefully to review each contender and select the best partner for Brisbane Airport,” Brodie said.

BAC expects to complete the RFP process by August 2013, to allow the successful operator to work with BAC to develop the tenancy for opening on 1 September 2014.

A separate RFP will also be released during the duty free RFP process for a speciality retail watch concession (this is expected to be issued this month).
