Canadian duty free sales fall -5% in first half – 24/08/06

CANADA. Canadian duty free sales fell -5% in the period from January to June 2006 compared to the same period in 2005, according to the latest national sales statistics released by Canada Border Services Agency and revealed by the Frontier Duty Free Association.

However, Western sales figures increased (in Alberta and British Columbia stores) due to a strong economy in that area of the country, and increased land border duty free representation.

Overall the main categories that dominate sales in land border duty free are as follows (in order of sales highest to lowest) – based on sales mix percentage for January to June 2006 figures:
1. Liquor/Wines, etc.
2. Tobacco
3. Perfume
4. Beer
5. Food (Chocolates/Maples, etc.)
6. Jewellery
7. Clothing (excluding leathers and furs)
8. Souvenirs
9. Other
10. Glassware/Crystal/China/Figurines
11. Leather Goods
12. Arts/Carvings/Crafts
13. Furs

National Sales Figures – Land Border Duty Free (Canada):
•Overall the national sales figures have decreased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $3.8 million. For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures also saw an overall decrease of approx. $1.1 million.
•The sales figures nationally for January/June 2006 were $67,388,595.62. For the month of June 2006, the National sales figure is $14,549,297.78.
•The category that has seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 was in the category of leather goods.
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the only national sales increase was identified in the leather goods category.

National Sales Figures – Airport Duty Free Stores (Canada):
•Overall sales figures nationally for January/June 2006 were approx. $80 million. For the month of June 2006, the National sales figure is $15,390,189.74.
•The national sales figures have decreased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $4 million. For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures also saw an overall decrease of approx. $1.6 million.
•The categories that have seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 were identified in the beer, jewellery and glassware categories
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the only national sales increase was identified in the glasswares category.

National Sales Figures – (Air and Land Border Duty Free Sales):
•Overall sales figures nationally for January/June 2006 were approx. $148 million. For the month of June 2006, the National sales figure is $29,939487.52.
•The national sales figures have decreased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $8 million. For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures also saw an overall decrease of approx. $2.8 million.
•The category that has seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 was identified in the Jewellery category
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the only national sales increase was identified in the Jewellery category.

Regional Sales Figures – Land Border Duty Free (Canada):

Prairie Region:
•Overall the Prairie sales figures have decreased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $38,000. For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures also saw an overall decrease of approx. $15,000
•The categories that have seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 were tobacco/cigars/pipes, glassware/crystal/china/figurines, food, souvenirs and “˜others’ categories
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the Prairie sales increases were identified in the beer, tobacco, jewellery, glassware/crystal, leather goods and other categories
•There were slight decreases noted in all other categories

Pacific Region:
•Overall the Pacific sales figures have increased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $227,000.
•For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures saw an increase in sales of approx. $49,000.
•The categories that have seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 were beer, liquor, tobacco, glassware/crystal/china, clothing, arts/crafts/food, and souvenirs
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the Pacific Region sales increases were identified in the liquor, beer, tobacco, jewellery, glassware, and leather goods categories.
•There were slight decreases noted in all other categories

Ontario:
•Overall the Ontario sales figures have decreased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $2.7 (million). For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures also saw an overall decrease of approx. $890,000.
•The category that has seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 was within the “Other” category.
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the Ontario Region sales increases were identified in the leather goods category.
•There were slight decreases noted in all other categories

Atlantic Region:
•Overall the Atlantic sales figures have decreased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $38,000. For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures also saw an overall decrease of approx. $16,000.
•The categories that have seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 were beer, arts/craft/carvings and Food categories.
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the Atlantic Region sales increases were identified in the beer, arts/crafts, leather goods, and food categories.
•There were slight decreases noted in all other categories

Quebec:
•Overall the Quebec sales figures have decreased from Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 by approx. $1.2 million. For the month of June 2006 compared to June 2005, the sales figures also saw an overall decrease of approx. $324,000.
•The category that has seen an increase in sales for Jan/June 2006 compared to Jan/June 2005 was the Jewellery category.
•For June 2006 compared to June 2005, the Quebec Region sales increases were identified in the Glassware/china/crystal/figurines category.
•There were slight decreases noted in all other categories
