SINGAPORE. Changi Airport posted a +21.6% surge in passenger traffic for May – its highest monthly year-on-year gain in 2010.
The Singapore gateway handled almost 3.39 million passenger movements during the month. This took passenger traffic for the first five months of the year to over 16.6 million, an increase of +16.7% year-on-year.
The sharp May increase reflects the continued strong recovery from a very soft early 2009. Passenger traffic was also assisted by the Vesak Day long weekend and the beginning of the mid-year school holidays at the end of May.
Changi Airport Group noted that growth was “broad based”, with all regions enjoying higher traffic compared to May 2009.
North America registered the strongest year-on-year increase of +43%, followed by Northeast Asia (+34%). Southeast Asia and South Asia also performed well, each registering growth of more than +20%. Full service carriers accounted for 60% of the increase in passenger traffic.
Airlines that added or started new services in May included Indonesia AirAsia (to Jakarta and Bali), Jetstar Asia (to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh and Penang), Silkair (to Bangalore) and Singapore Airlines (to Hong Kong).
As at 1 June 2010 Changi Airport served 88 airlines operating 5,070 weekly scheduled flights to more than 200 cities in some 60 countries and territories.
