SINGAPORE. Daily passenger traffic at Singapore Changi Airport broke through the 100,000 barrier for the first time in its history last month.
”It was due to the start of school holidays in most countries and attractive air ticket prices offered by both budget and full-service carriers,” an airport spokeswoman told Kyodo News.
More than 100,000 passengers passed through the airport daily for three days last month, she said. The previous record was about 98,000 in December last year and in 2002.
The Singapore Tourism Board said Thursday that it expects a bumper year for the tourism industry this year. Visitor arrivals are projected to hit a record high of 8 million early next week, exceeding the 2004 forecast of 7.6 million visitors.
Total visitor arrivals in the first 11 months of this year are up +10% compared with the same period in 2002, the last normalised comparison.
The airport handled 27.4 million passengers in the first 11 months of this year, up +24.7% over last year, which was badly hit by SARS, and +4.5% higher than in 2002.
Singapore Changi Airport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore are profiled in the forthcoming print edition of The Moodie Report.
