DENMARK. Copenhagen Airports today announced strong May traffic results for its associate companies in Mexico, the UK and China.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) posted passenger traffic of +16.4% year-on-year for May 2004. ASUR is a Mexican airport operator with concessions to operate, maintain and develop the airports of Cancun, Merida, Cozumel, Villahermosa, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Huatulco, Tapachula and Minatitlan in the southeast of Mexico.
The busiest airport, Cancun, showed strong growth, up +18.9% to 822,748 passengers. Villahermosa rose +16.4% to 1,138,035. Cozumel rose +43.2% to 45,565; Veracruz increased +10.9% to 57,154 and Merida fell -1.5% to 75,244.
At Hainan Meilan International Airport in China, passenger numbers climbed +632% year-on-year in May. The comparative month last year saw the SARS crisis at its worst. For the year to date, passenger numbers are up +43%. Duty free is run by China Duty Free Group.
At Newcastle Airport in the UK, low-cost airline passengers increased +162% for the month to 75,852. International scheduled traffic slipped -8% to 35,807 and charter traffic grew +4% to 202,277. For the year to date the three categories are up +311%, down -10% and up +5% respectively.
Meanwhile, the total number of international passengers passing through Copenhagen Airport in May increased by +9.8%. Scheduled international traffic rose +9.2% and international charter numbers were up +18.6%.
