Cutty Sark Tam o’Shanter whisky is launched in a spirit of adventure

Edrington-owned Cutty Sark is introducing a new limited-edition Scotch whisky blend that celebrates its Scottish heritage.

Launched this month, Cutty Sark Tam o’Shanter Blended Scotch Whisky (46.5%abv) is a development of Cutty Sark 25yo with a “darker, wilder side reflecting the world famous poem from which it takes its name”, the company said. It is the first expression created by Cutty Sark Master Blender Kirsteen Campbell.

The brand name Cutty Sark was inspired by a famous tea clipper built at Dumbarton in Scotland in 1869 which sailed the world and now rests in Greenwich, London.

The ship builders had chosen the name Cutty Sark from the poem Tam o’Shanter, penned by the Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1790.

The poem tells the tale of Tam, an Ayrshire man, who was riding home from the pub one evening when he came across a gathering of witches and warlocks. One of the witches, described as wearing a short shirt, or “cutty sark”, chased after Tam, but only caught the tail of his horse before he escaped.

Sinister imagery of Goudie’s artwork

The Cutty Sark Tam o’Shanter bottle features a scene from this poem etched around the bottle and a wax closure showing Tam’s face. The designs are inspired by the late Alexander Goudie, one of Scotland’s finest figurative painters.

The bottle is presented in a premium bespoke oak gift box, decorated in the style of Goudie, which contains a 134-page book telling the story of Tam o’ Shanter through over 50 illustrated scenes by Goudie.

Only 5,000 bottles of this new blend have been created. They will be offered to selected domestic and travel retail outlets and priced in travel retail at US$329.

Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky Brand Controller Jason Craig commented: “Our Tam o’Shanter bottling is an exploration of the Cutty Sark brand’s fascinating heritage, and tells the story of how our whisky got its name. Our Master Blender Kirsteen Campbell has brought a darker edge to our award-winning 25yo blend, echoing the sinister imagery of the Goudie artwork adorning the gift box and bottle, which stays true to the adventurous spirit of the Cutty Sark brand.”
