UAE. Dubai Duty Free returned to Ascot in the UK as the new title sponsor of the Shergar Cup which took place on 12 August 2006 at the newly refurbished course. A crowd of almost 21,000 turned out to the UK’s only team event, to see a convincing 158 to 95 points victory for champion jockey Jamie Spencer’s Great Britain & Ireland team, over Frankie Dettori’s Rest of the World squad.
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier international jockeys tournament, featuring six-star riders representing Great Britain & Ireland competing against six international superstars from the Rest of the World. Points are awarded for the first five places in each of six races at the event.
Victory for the Great Britain & the Ireland team was sealed after race five despite the race being won by Rest of the World team rider, Gerald Mosse, aboard Ebor hopeful, Young Mick. Second and third place points for Ryan Moore on Ti Adora and Jamie Spencer riding Mikao, gave the home side an unassailable 133-76 lead in the competition.
At a special closing ceremony, Dubai Duty Free Managing Director Colm McLoughlin and Salah Tahlak, Director – Corporate Communications & DTC, along with the Dubai Duty Free Marketing Team, Haydee Hilario and Jasmin Micoyco, presented the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Trophy to Great Britain & Ireland team captain Jamie Spencer and team manager Jason Weaver.
Commenting on the day’s event, McLoughlin said: “Our association with this unique event goes back to 2000, and we are thrilled to have taken on the title sponsorship of this very popular day in Ascot’s racing calendar.”
Thousands of racegoers enjoyed a post racing concert by international singing sensation Charlotte Church whose new album, ‘Tissues and Issues’ has catapulted the 20-year-old to success in the pop world after nearly eight years as a renowned classical star.
