DENMARK. In major breaking news, Copenhagen Airports A/S has struck a new duty free contract with incumbent Gebr Heinemann, which the airport says will deliver a “world class” shopping environment for passengers.
The decision followed a selective tender process, in which LS travel retail/Aelia and World Duty Free Group also participated.

The contract, which comes into force on 1 March 2013, covers the operation of Copenhagen Airport’s six tax-free shops and e-trading platform.
Copenhagen Airports Vice President Sales and Marketing Carsten Nørland said: “Three very strong bids were submitted, so it was a close race and a difficult decision for us to make. We chose Gebr Heinemann because the company offered the best commercial solution and the right match for our vision for the tax-free area and the continued development of the airport as a world-class hub.

“The aim is to create positive travel experiences to strengthen the international top ranking of the shopping centre, and we are confident that a strong partner like Gebr Heinemann can contribute to this end.”
“The duty free concession at Copenhagen Airport is one of the most valuable contracts worldwide,” said Gebr Heinemann Executive Director Raoul Spanger. “We are happy to continue a very good relationship with the management of CPH and develop our consumer orientated approach further.”
WORLD-CLASS AIRPORT SHOPPING
In December 2011, Copenhagen Airports invited leading European duty free retailers to submit tenders for the concession. To ensure a high-quality tender, the airport carried out a comprehensive pre-screening, narrowing down the field of bidders to LS/Aelia, World Duty Free Group and Gebr Heinemann. Gebr Heinemann has operated CPH’s tax-free shops since 1 March 2007, and Nørland said that Copenhagen Airport was looking forward to continuing this partnership.
“In 2011, Copenhagen Airport was rated ‘Europe’s Best Airport Shopping Experience’ for the third year running, and we endeavour to ensure that passenger satisfaction will remain high going forward. We are convinced that Gebr Heinemann’s new, all-round concept will contribute to this end. The concept revolves around unique shopping experiences such as events, tastings, and a strong regional branding zone to name a few,” said Nørland.
Tore Hov, General Manager at Heinemann Retail Denmark, added: “The shop layout and décor will be an experience in itself, conveying a strong Copenhagen Sense of place. We look forward to this new chapter of our partnership with Copenhagen Airport and to welcoming travellers in the new stores in the spring of 2013.”
Gebr. Heinemann currently operates more than 230 shops at 48 international airports in 19 countries, including the airports in Frankfurt, Berlin, Oslo and Istanbul.
