Global airport passenger traffic maintains positive trend with +1.8% year-on-year rise in October – 04/12/09

INTERNATIONAL. Passenger traffic at the world’s airports maintained the recent robust trend with a +1.8% rise in volumes in October compared to the same month last year. Airports Council International (ACI) revealed the latest figures today in its monthly ACI PaxFlash.

International traffic dipped by -0.2% in the month, though this was an improvement on the -1.1% drop in September. Domestic passenger volumes rose by +3.5%.

The positive figures for October were bolstered by improved results in Europe (-1.9%) and North America (-1.3%) – mature markets hard hit by economic recession, noted ACI. Latin America/Caribbean airports registered strong domestic growth (up +25.8%, with an overall increase of +18.8%). Continuing growth in Asia Pacific (+6.7%) and Middle East (+8.7%) markets also contributed to the improving overall results, although these were slightly below strong September figures. African traffic dipped by -1.9% year-on-year.

ACI said: “Comparing month-by-month results against 2008 for the past 12 months, global traffic has continued to climb since May 2009 – with domestic traffic leading the renewed demand curve.

“The slight decrease in domestic traffic growth [+3.5% in October compared to +4.4% in September] is due to more moderate growth results, primarily in China, and modest results in the Philippines reflect the impact of bad weather conditions.”

Key Indian airports reported good results with strong domestic traffic growth at Mumbai (+ 33.1%) and Delhi (+37.9%). Other major locations to report strong domestic growth included Sao Paulo (+37%), Jakarta (+26.4%) and Bangkok (+54.9% domestic and +11.4% international).

International traffic leaders around the world in October included Kuala Lumpur (+19.5%), Washington DC (+16.8%), Dubai (+12.2%) and Istanbul (+13.6%).

For the year to date total passenger traffic is down by -3.9% year-on-year, with international traffic down -5.4% and domestic off by -2.5%.
