Growing outside your comfort zone: Airport Dimensions’ Nancy Knipp on women in leadership

USA. Airport Dimensions President of the Americas Nancy Knipp shared her experiences from a long career in the aviation and airport sphere at the recent Airport Experience Conference, which took place in Denver, Colorado, earlier this month.

Taking part in a panel session of four women leaders in the airport and concessions industries, Knipp offered her views on success, learnings and accomplishments that have seen her excel in a male-dominated space.

The discussion considered what each of the industry leaders are doing to engage the next generation of men and women and to ensure they thrive within their respective workforces, moulding innovative and forward-thinking leaders of the future.

Consistent for each of the panellists at the event was the experience that risks were essential for their growth and development throughout their careers. Knipp urged young professionals to explore the breadth of their options, and to push themselves to take the risk to do so.

“If you are starting your career and you have the opportunity to move, to live in different areas, to try different places and go outside your comfort zone, that’s how you grow,” she said.

“In taking risks, I was able to move into different positions.”

As President of Airport Dimensions Americas Nancy Knipp spearheads company strategy for lounge network growth, brand strategy, product and customer experience delivery, joint venture partnerships and lounge acquisitions.

Knipp’s experience in the airline industry includes over 30 years at American Airlines, where her positions included Managing Director Japan and President & Managing Director Admirals Club and Premium Services.

She joined Airport Dimensions in 2013 and was appointed President Airport Dimensions Americas in January 2020.

Knipp highlighted the importance of building a supportive network of both peers and mentors in order to build and maintain confidence as you develop as a leader, especially when feeling isolated on that developmental journey.

She noted the significant benefits that can be felt from two-way relationships and reverse mentoring whereby senior leadership can gain valuable insights from more junior members of their teams, particularly young women that are just starting out in their careers.

With each of the panellists also noting that their insights can be applied both to the corporate side of their sectors, as well as the more customer-facing careers that can be overlooked by some, the discussion proffered tips and takeaways for all looking to build their careers in the sector.
