Habanos SA introduces new vitola and extends Cohiba band to other lines

Habanos has added a new heavy ring gauge Le Hoyo De San Juan vitola to its Serie Le Hoyo as the historic line looks to “reinvent itself” and expand. At the same time the company is presenting more lines with its technologically advanced Cohiba band.

Regarded as the most prestigious Habanos brand, Cohiba is extending the band presented in Cohiba Pirámides Extra to all sizes of the Línea Clásica and the Línea 1492. The old and the new bands will coexist for some months, Habanos stated.

A flagship brand of Habanos, Cohiba was created in 1966 and its cigars – produced at the El Laguito factory in Havana, Cuba – were said to be favoured by the Cuban President Fidel Castro and available then as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats. Cohiba has four lines: Línea Clásica, composed of six vitolas developed between 1966 and 1989; Línea 1492, launched in 1992 to commemorate the fifth centenary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival on the island; Maduro 5, introduced in 2007 with three new vitolas; and Cohiba Behike, the brand’s most exclusive line introduced in 2010.

The band for the Línea Behike incorporated advanced technological techniques and security measures, establishing a new technological trend in the bands of the Cohiba brand as well as in the cigar industry worldwide. The new Cohiba band was introduced for the first time with the release of Piramides Extra, featuring a hologram design that can be certified and increased security measures that allow for a better traceability of each Habano.

New from the Serie Le Hoyo – described as a “historic line that is reinventing itself” through expansion and innovation – is the Le Hoyo de San Juan (54 ring gauge x 150mm length), a heavy ring gauge vitola that allows Hoyo de Monterrey fans to “enjoy an extended range of heavy ring gauges sizes, which were quite limited in the brand until now”.

The Serie Le Hoyo is a “historic line that is reinventing itself”, according to Habanos

Its blend includes Seco and Ligero leaves from San Juan y Martínez, where the brand was born in 1865. Hoyo de Monterrey, Habanos explained, owes its origins to the plantation of the same name located in San Juan y Martínez (D.O.P), in the heart of the Vuelta Abajo (D.O.P) zone. All Hoyo de Monterrey vitolas are handmade with long filler made by expert Cuban rollers.

According to Habanos the Le Hoyo Series is traditionally known for its slender and medium ring gauges. The medium length Le Hoyo de San Juan is characterised by its light flavour and is suitable for those those “who like a lighter Habano that is delicate and aromatic, as well as exceedingly elegant and complex”.

Le Hoyo de San Juan will be available in the brand’s classic Cabinet Selection or Slide Lid Box (SLB) of 25 and 10 units. The boxes also include changes to the brand’s image: an adhesive rectangular seal on the short side of the box and a white ribbon on boxes of 25 units.

Le Hoyo de San Juan, featuring a red band which Habanos hopes will heighten the brand’s image, will be available worldwide in the coming weeks, together with the additional Cohiba bands.
