AMERICAS. The International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores (IAADFS) last night announced a young people’s scholarship to honour the memory of the late Alberto C Motta Sr.
Mr Motta created Motta Internacional and is seen as the founding father of Americas duty free. He passed away in late 2006. He opened the region’s first airport duty free store in Panama City in 1949 and fought to establish the duty free concept in the country and across the region.
He was a long-time key figure in the International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores (IAADFS), whose President is Motta’s son, Alberto ‘Pancho’ Motta Jr.
In a moving tribute last night, former IAADFS President David Bernstein announced the creation of the scholarship. It is designed to enable young people who require financial assistance to benefit from education opportunities in Panama. “Tonight we want to celebrate the life of a legend,” he said.
“This is the best way to keep his legacy intact,” he told a hushed audience. “Let’s raise a glass to the memory and goodness of Don Alberto.”
