GERMANY. Today’s selection of images comes from Nuremberg Airport, where The Store Makers at umdasch and Smartseller have revealed new pictures of their hybrid retail and F&B concept.
Smartseller, a joint venture between casualfood and Gebr. Heinemann, was founded in 2020 with the goal of developing duty-free shops into an innovative and modern hybrid concept that combines both shopping and gastronomy.

As reported, the 1,100sq m Smartseller store opened in April and offers travellers an innovative duty-free shopping experience combined with high-quality food & beverage options and a sense of place.
At the heart of the store is a central wine bar that serves as a convivial social hub, while a dedicated ‘spa area’ offers a variety of perfumes & cosmetics brands. The centrepiece furniture is designed to guide travellers through ‘pleasure islands’ and can be reconfigured to suit different product categories and customer flows.

An elliptical light sculpture at the entrance is a standout element and illuminated lettering helps with wayfinding. In addition, the wall area features the Basixx Family shelving system from umdasch
Inside, a beer garden fashioned from authentic beer barrels pays tribute to Franconian brewing traditions.
According to umdasch, the hybrid Smartseller concept caters to the varied needs of today’s travellers – whether seeking a quick coffee, classic duty‑free items or regional culinary offerings.

umdasch The Store Makers executed every stage of the project – from initial concept through to installation – ensuring minimal disruption to passengers during build‑out. Their full‑service approach included bespoke furniture, illuminated sculptures and catering fixtures.
“After numerous successful projects – including at Frankfurt, Berlin and Vienna airports – we are delighted to have realised another strong travel retail concept with the Smartseller store in Nuremberg, which perfectly combines design, function and regional experience,” commented umdasch The Store Makers Key Account Manager Daniel Hundegger.
With its refined execution by umdasch, the Smartseller store demonstrates how airport commercial spaces can transcend mere retail to offer immersive, place‑based experiences. ✈
