Images of the Day – Moët Hennessy Travel Retail extends reach of its experimental Wonder Machine

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

INTERNATIONAL. Our latest selection of images comes from Moët Hennessy Travel Retail, as it extends its Wonder Machine to new locations. The innovation digital tool is described as a “playful, personalised experience” that invites travellers to find their whisky match.

The Wonder Machine offers travellers the chance to experiment for themselves by exploring the aromatic personalities of creations in the travel retail range – until they discover their personal whisky favourite.

Introduced recently with China Duty Free Group at the cdf Haikou International Duty-Free Shopping Complex, as reported, plus London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 and Edinburgh Airport, further outlets will appear soon at Incheon International Airport and other locations.

The experimental Wonder Machine seeks to immerse drinkers “in the sights, sounds and scents of the Highland single malt Scotch’s wondrous world”, said the brand owner, which “promises to spark travellers’ imaginations and introduce each to a bottling which perfectly suits their taste”.

The Wonder Machine merges physical and digital technologies to create a “sensory playground”. First, using a touchpad encased in copper casing shaped like a still, users pick their whisky personality from a brand selection – followed by a dramatic, personalised visual tour of the whisky’s world via an immersive display.

Next, the machine’s cogs, dials and belts playfully whirr into action on screen, allowing them to select a favourite scent from six aromas, each hinting at the essence of each whisky.

Crafted by Glenmorangie’s Master Blender and Head of Whisky Creation Gillian Macdonald and an expert perfumier, these scents include roasting coffee beans, a nod to Glenmorangie Signet’s mocha notes, the melting toffee tones of Glenmorangie Elementa and more.

Travellers can also experiment with six soundscapes, each reflecting a whisky’s spirit and flavour. These include the sound of a heartbeat and the sizzle of coffee beans tumbling in the heat.

Finally, the traveller can scent the single malt’s complex aromatic signature, discover more about their whisky match and explore a cocktail recommendation, which is connected to WeChat in China. They are then invited to taste the whisky at the boutique bar. ✈
