Japanese travel to be buoyed by strong Golden Week demand

JAPAN. Outbound Japanese travel numbers will grow by +4.31% year-on-year during the critical Golden Week period in 2010, according to a survey by the JTB Foundation, reported by Travel Journal International (TJI) Online.

JTB’s “˜Trends of Golden Week 2010′ report forecasts that 508,000 travellers will head overseas in the period between 24 April and 4 May. This follows two years of weak demand, and a bounce back from last year’s lacklustre Golden Week, which was hit by the impact of the H1N1 virus.

Around 60% of travellers, or 306,000 people, will head to Asia Pacific destinations, said JTB, while North America (including Hawaii, Guam and Canada) will generate some 106,000 visitors, up by +2.91%. European destinations can expect 67,000 Japanese visitors in the period, ahead by +6.35% year-on-year.

Of the key Asian markets, South Korea is the only one expected to see a slide in visitors, with 98,000 set to travel there, down by -4.85%. China, partly thanks to the attraction of the Shanghai World Expo, will post a +12.5% jump to 90,000, noted JTB.

The Expo, which runs for 184 days from 1 May through to 31 October, is expected to draw 1 million visitors from Japan.

The JTB survey, conducted from 4-16 March, combined with market indicators including booking trends from airlines, reveals that the average spending by Japanese on overseas travel during Golden Week will be Y223,100 (US$2,377), up by +2.91% compared to a year ago.
