CHILE/PERU. LAN has reported a +13.5% increase in its Chilean passenger traffic for May, compared to May 2007.
Domestic passenger traffic led the overall result, with a +22.3% increase. International passenger traffic grew by +12.3%.
LAN shrugged off disruption following the eruption of the Chaitén volcano, which caused a suspension of flights to the southern Chilean airports of Osorno, Puerto Montt, Temuco and Valdivia in late May.
LAN also stands to benefit from developments in Peru, where its LAN Peru airline operates from a base at Jorge Chavez Lima International Airport.
Competitor Aerocondor saw its Boeing 737 fleet grounded from 11 June, although it maintained flights on the Lima–Cajamarca route as well as tourist flights over Nazca.
The airline stated that it was temporarily suspending regular flights due to high aviation fuel costs. But Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communication said in a public statement that it had grounded Aerocondor because of to safety concerns following recent incidents involved 737s.
