Mars Wrigley integrates Dutch and travel retail operations under Jack Tabbers’ leadership

Jack Tabbers: Confident of the mid- and long-term future of travel retail

Mars Wrigley International Travel Retail is being integrated with the confectionery and chocolate house’s Netherlands operation from January to create a larger and stronger single unit.

The integrated business will be led by the experienced and much-respected Jack Tabbers as General Manager, Mars Netherlands and International Travel Retail.

Tabbers has been leading both units in an interim capacity since May, a period during which he noted in an internal message, “I have gained confidence in travel retail’s medium- and longer-term future as well as the plans we have to navigate the more immediate challenges facing the industry”.

Mars Wrigley is the world’s leading manufacturer of chocolate, chewing gum, mints and fruity confections.

Tabbers knows the travel retail channel intimately. He led Mars International Travel Retail (MITR) for three and a half years until July 2012 before taking up the key role of Head of Mars The Netherlands. That post included management of the largest production site for Mars chocolate brands at Veghel.

As noted, he returned to travel retail this year in an initially combined role with his local market responsibilities upon the departure of Mars Wrigley International Travel Retail General Manager Gary Clarke.

We’ll bring you an interview with Jack Tabbers in early 2021.

Mars Wrigley produces several of the world’s leading confectionery and gum brands including M&M’s, Snickers, Orbit, Extra and Skittles.

Mars Wrigley International Travel Retail believes that consumers in the channel will increasingly seek value in sharing products such as the M&M’s line above and an enhanced focus on premiumisation in gifting

The company also has a hugely ambitious corporate social responsibility programme. Highlights include:

  • A US$1 billion investment in building a new cocoa supply chain model centred on smallholder farmers.
  • Creating more sustainable and resilient mint through plant science and investing in communities.
  • Reducing the company’s carbon footprint by using enough renewable energy to create all M&Ms sold.
  • Following a Nourishing Wellbeing commitment to advance science, innovation and marketing in ways that help billions of people and their pets lead healthier, happier lives.
