Non-aviation performance lifts Berlin Airports in 2010

GERMANY. Berlin Airports’ non-aviation turnover climbed by +5.2% year-on-year in 2010 to €43.8 million, the company announced today.

Despite the impact of last year’s ash cloud and weather-related problems, passenger traffic climbed +6.4% to 22 million at the airports of Tegel und Schönefeld in the year. This compared favourably to the +4.7% increase in passenger traffic across all of Germany’s airports in 2010, the company noted.

“This is the eighth year in a row that we have exceeded the average growth at German airports,” said Berlin Airports CEO Rainer Schwartz. “Berlin is back on the international aviation map.”

Total turnover hit €506 million, surging from €243.9 million in 2009, though this was due to the special one-off effect from a construction contract with Germany’s rail authorities. EBITDA hit €109 million in the year.

Work is proceeding at pace on the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, set to open in June 2012, and most of the major construction should be completed by the end of November, said Berlin Airports.
