Nuance-Watson Asia captures retail concessions at Xiamen Airport T4

CHINA. Nuance-Watson Asia has captured three retail concessions at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport’s new Terminal 4, which will be completed in the second half of this year.

The concessions will run for five years until 2019. Spanning close to 1,100sq m in the T4 Departures airside area, Nuance-Watson’s retail precinct will include 40 international brands. Fragrances & cosmetics will feature at Nuance-Watson’s Temptation store; there will be a new high-end watch concept branded as Moments, plus six standalone brand boutiques: Furla, Hugo Boss, Michael Kors, Montblanc, Swarovski and Tumi.

The new Terminal 4 is designed to handle an annual passenger throughput of 12 million, and will serve domestic passengers. It will handle over half of the current domestic traffic served by Terminal 3.

Xiamen Airport is one of the fastest-growing airports in China. In 2013, it was the 11th busiest in terms of passenger traffic with 19.8 million passengers and the 10th busiest airport by traffic movements.

Nuance-Watson Asia Regional Managing Director Alessandra Piovesana said: “We are highly motivated and feel grateful to Xiamen Airport Authority for considering Nuance-Watson for this opportunity, which is a promising development to accelerate our growth in China.

“We have been present in Zhuhai Airport since 2007. It started as a learning experience in a risk-controlled environment. After seven years of operation, we are now well equipped to advance our growth momentum in China. This opportunity in Xiamen Airport will mark our first sizeable presence and the first major entry of Nuance-Watson into China.

“We will rebuild our strengths and reinstate our long-standing brand partnerships by leveraging our credentials and proven track record in the categories of perfumes & cosmetics, high end fashion and accessories, watches and fashion jewellery.

“We thank all our brand partners for their unwavering trust and confidence in us. As always, we will strive to create a high-performing retail environment, with a strong line-up between retail offers and passengers that warrants world-class image, excellent customer service and a total shopping experience. Our aim is to set a benchmark for our future China development and create a flagship showcase for Xiamen Airport.”

She added that Nuance-Watson remains active in working to secure new concessions in the region. “This new venture further underlines our determination to grow and expand in Asia for which our commitment remains strong and our expertise at the top of the industry. This is an important step in the turnaround of our company. The winning of the concessions gives our people a boost of confidence and the motivation we need to upkeep our stronghold in travel retail with a long-term perspective in mind.”

As the economic hub of southeast China and the western coast of the Taiwan Strait, Xiamen benefits from large capital in-flows from Hong Kong and Macau as well as cross-strait cooperation and exchanges with Taiwan. It ranks as the ninth largest city in China for personal consumption per capita, said Nuance-Watson.

Piovesana said: “Xiamen is the ancestral home for a significant number of overseas Chinese as well as many living in Hong Kong and Macau. As Xiamen and Taiwan are geographically close to each other, and their people speak the same dialect, they share similar culture and customs. With over 15 years’ in-depth knowledge of mainland Chinese and Taiwanese customers through our operations at HKIA and Venetian Macau, we will have an advantage in capturing the travelling customers at Xiamen Airport. Our united regional team in partnership with Xiamen Airport is ready to embark upon a new path of growth.”
