(L-R) DataFlight Europe Head of Service and Support Steffen Jensen, DataFlight Europe CEO Jesper Schultz, Philippine Airlines VP Treasury Stewart Lim and Philippine Airlines Assistant Vice President Catering Services Jaime Arturo Viola confirm the introduction of the OnBoard Trader system to Philippine Airlines flights |
PHILIPPINES. Philippine Airlines (PAL) is to introduce a new system of mobile terminals for sales and sales management onboard its aircraft this summer.
Developed by Danish IT company DataFlight Europe, nearly 100 terminals are to be used onboard PAL’s fleet of 30 Airbus aircraft and on five Boeing 747’s.
The new terminals will electronically manage all of PAL’s onboard sales via mobile point-of-sale terminals. Passengers will have their duty free purchases scanned and will then be able to pay using their credit cards, including those with chip & pin technology. Finally they will receive a printed receipt after the completed purchase.
The new technology means that the transaction process between passengers and their credit card companies and banks is fully automated, with the added benefit of automated reporting of duty free sales to Customs authorities.

Singapore Airlines already uses the OnBoard Trader system successfully on its flights |
The system, named OnBoard Trader, also collates stock management data plus information about the location and contents of an airline’s sales trolleys. The hardware element of the terminal, provided by Canon, is then integrated with specially developed barcode readers, scanners and a chip & pin module by DataFlight Europe.
“It is necessary to automate the whole purchase and sales process if you want to run a business in dynamic companies such as airlines,” said DataFlight Europe CEO Jesper Schultz. “Philippine Airlines, for instance, operates 35 aircraft to 18 national destinations in the large island nation and 26 international destinations. Many of them are served several times daily. And they need to have the right selection of products in their trolleys all the time. This is not achievable without comprehensive computer systems.”
DataFlight Europe currently provides technology for Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, China Airlines, Japan Airlines, Virgin Blue, My Travel Airways and Qatar Airways.
Philippine Airlines’ cabin crews will begin using the OnBoard Trader technology in June.
