Puerta del Sur extends its concession at Montevideo Carrasco

URUGUAY. Uruguay’s Council of Ministers has approved a ten-year extension to the management concession held by Puerta del Sur for Montevideo Carrasco International Airport.

Presidential Secretary Homero Guerrero announced the measure granting Puerta del Sur management rights at the airport until 2033.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Defence proposed the move to prolong Puerta del Sur’s role beyond the original 20-year term, which was due to end in 2023.

The extension will deliver “a significant income for the state,” said Guerrero. Puerta del Sur will pay US$26 million over the additional term, comprising US$20 million in general rental, US$3 million for a new flight plan and a further US$3 million for the renovation of the old airport terminal.

Puerta del Sur is a subsidiary of Buenos Aires-based Corporación America, which also manages Argentinean airports through Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 (AA2000) and is a partner in Brasilia and Natal airports in Brazil.

Dufry holds the duty free concession at the airport, trading under the Duty Free Uruguay brand.

In further good news for Puerta del Sur, the Uruguayan government will reduce the price of aviation fuel at Carrasco by -8%, effective from 25 January.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance backed the move in order to maintain parity with regional neighbours and facilitate aviation links.
