Rémy Cointreau releases rare Louis XIII Cognac – 02/11/09

Handcrafted in black crystal, more than 50 operations by Baccarat artisans are necessary to make this Louis XIII decanter

FRANCE. Rémy Cointreau Global Travel Retail launched its Rémy Martin Louis XIII Rare Cask Cognac at the TFWA World Exhibition last month.

Louis XIII Rare Cask is described as a “supremely rare” limited-edition Cognac, drawn from a single cask. Each decanter will retail at about €10,000.

Cellar master Pierrette Trichet decided to present one cask as a special edition for connoisseurs

For the first time in the history of Louis XIII, cellar master Pierrette Trichet has decided to present one cask as a special edition to be enjoyed by connoisseurs.

The first edition comprises 786 numbered decanters each designated “˜43.8′ for the alcoholic strength that is the distinguishing mark of the cask.

Through a combination of factors such as climate and humidity during its ageing, the cask has developed an extra strength of 43.8 instead of 40 degrees alcohol.

The craftsmen of French house Baccarat have created a fresh version of the iconic Louis XIII decanter, whose shape was inspired by an ancient metal flask that was found in the mid 19th Century on the site of a 16th Century battleground.

Handcrafted in black crystal, more than 50 operations are necessary to make a Louis XIII decanter, all of which must be executed by a team of some 20 master craftsmen working together before the glass cools. The neck of the decanter is dressed in palladium.

The Moodie BlogWhen rarity is perfection
The elegant black invitation card from Rémy Cointreau Global Travel Retail promised much. The evening delivered so much more. In the wonderful Château de La Napoule outside Cannes, an exquisite Cognac was unveiled to the world. Louis XIII Rare Cask comprises a blend of 1,200 eaux-de-vie aged between 40 and 100 years.

The decanter is presented in a coffret forged in metal. Mirrors and internal lighting aim to display the lustre of the black crystal, and the neck of the decanter is secured by a metal clasp that is designed to present the black crystal stopper like a precious jewel.

The coffret is embellished with a quatrefoil design inspired by the royal fleur-de-lys of France, aiming to offer a contemporary rendition of a traditional motif that celebrates the historic roots of Louis XIII.

Another Louis XIII Rare Cask is on the cards, according to the cellar master, but neither the timing nor the details have been revealed.
