Schiphol Airport Retail takes over key confectionery concessions

Schiphol Group’s in-house retail operation is taking over the key confectionery concessions in Amsterdam

NETHERLANDS. Schiphol Airport Retail is broadening its portfolio at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol by taking over The Nuance Group’s confectionery concessions in the See Buy Fly retail area beyond passport control.

The move is effective this week, and includes three chocolate and candy stores and six sales points on the piers, which employ a total of 39 people. These employees will be transferred to Schiphol Airport Retail, a wholly owned subsidiary of Schiphol Group.

“The Nuance Group has been operating at the airport for over 15 years and has shown strong commitment to meeting passengers’ expectations and developing the confectionery category over the years,” said Schiphol Group.

“The expansion fits in well with Schiphol Group’s strategy to further strengthen Schiphol Airport Retail’s retail activities. The expansion means that Schiphol Airport Retail now operates all See Buy Fly stores in the liquor, tobacco and confectionery segment.”

Schiphol Airport Retail was established in January 2007 to take the liquor & tobacco operations of previous retailer KLM Tax Free Services in-house. In the same year the group announced a joint venture with Nuance to manage the liquor, tobacco and confectionery business, only for this to fall through before the scheduled start date, amid different evaluations of the worth of the business – and the cost of doing it.

Under previous commercial management, Schiphol Group also attempted to oust fragrances & cosmetics concessionaire Kappé Schiphol, and take the business on itself. But Kappé won a court ruling last year that allowed it to retain its business, and it has since struck a new five-year agreement at the location.
