This week on Chinese social media: Celebrating Hainan Expo and Chinese Valentine’s Day

CHINA. Our regular column presents a snapshot of retailer promotional activities on Chinese social media, with a focus on promotions during last week’s China International Consumer Products Expo (Hainan Expo) and Chinese Valentine’s Day.

CNSC 

To celebrate the Hainan Expo and the upcoming Chinese Valentine’s Day (4 August), CNSC is running online and offline promotions as well as flash sales.

Featured products in the latest promotion include La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream 100ml at CNY2,279; Lancôme Tonique Confort 400ml CNY200; Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream 50ml CNY144; Valentino Cushion Foundation CNY334; YSL lipstick CNY162 and Jo Malone perfume 30ml CNY320.

Note: CNY200 = US$30.

A free makeup service was offered to all customers visiting CNSC instore on 28-30 July. CNSC is also distributing extra gift vouchers of CNY800 off CNY8,000 spend, CNY500 off CNY5,000 spend, and CNY200 off CNY2,000 spend, which can be used on top of the cash vouchers issued by Hainan government to boost local consumption.

The next round of government cash voucher distribution took place this week on 1 August. Customers can also enjoy additional discounts of CNY50 off CNY500 spend, CNY100 off CNY1,000 spend, CNY200 off CNY2,000 spend and CNY300 off CNY3,000 spend when making payments in e-RMB from ICBC bank accounts.

Sunrise Duty Free  

Chinese Valentine’s Day is the top agenda of Sunrise Duty Free this week. Apart from the promotions including Filorga Meso Mask at CNY459, Make Up Forever Mist & Fix travel set CNY256 and Estée Lauder Nutritious skincare set CNY954, Sunrise Duty Free also held two livestreams with joint efforts from its teams across Beijing, Shanghai and Hainan on 23 and 30 July.

Other products on sale include Thann sunscreen at CNY142; Lancôme Advanced Genefique eye cream duo CNY590; SK-II Facial Treatment Mask 10pcs CNY539; YSL Libre perfume 30ml CNY376 and Tumi backpack CNY1,475.

Times DF Mission Hills 

Times DF Mission Hills is extending its promotions during the Expo to 8 August, featuring up to -50% off beauty and perfume, up to -30% off and 6x loyalty points on liquor, and up to -60% off and 8x loyalty points on fashion.

Some bestselling products are also on sale, including: Helena Rubinstein RePlasty skincare set at CNY4041; La Mer The Regenerating Serum CNY1631.5; Darphin Daily Rescue Serum CNY272.5; Tom Ford White Suede perfume CNY1423.1; Salvatore Ferragamo Vara Bow handbag  CNY10,800 with 8x loyalty points; Martell Chanteloup Cognac CNY2582.1 with 3x loyalty points and Camus Borderies XO at CNY1178.1 with 3x loyalty points.

Furthermore, the flash sale at 10am every day offers super discounts of -30-40% on two selected products.

Times DF Mission Hills also partners with Alipay, Agricultural Bank of China, China Merchants Bank and Bank of China to bring further discounts to its customers, offering a ‘shopping for free’ lottery draw of up to a budget of CNY49,999. There are also further discounts of CNY50 off CNY2,000, CNY50 off CNY600 and CNY180 off CNY5,000 and red packet up to CNY888 off CNY1,000.

Cash vouchers from Haikou Municipal Government can also be added to the deals via the Yunshanfu app.

Global Duty Free (GDF) Premium Plaza

GDF offered a dedicated shuttle between its shopping complex and the China International Consumer Products Expo for customers to join the event and further explore their offerings.

Anyone visiting GDF’s exhibition hall at the Expo could enjoy cash vouchers totalling CNY675, a free travel set when sharing GDF-themed posts in their WeChat friends circle and an additional gift set when spending over CNY399 with GDF at the Expo.

After a tour at the Expo, GDF customers could return to GDF Plaza to enjoy further discounts including cash vouchers of CNY35 and 50, complementing their duty free shopping in Haikou.

GDF also accepts cash vouchers issued by the Haikou government, which can be superimposed on all sale items. To celebrate the Expo, GDF offered up -50% off on all categories; 10x loyalty points on Byredo and Frederic Malle perfumes; buy 2 get -35% off on beauty products from Gucci and Burberry; -30% off skincare devices from Tripollar, Zeus, Refa and CNY60 off every CNY200 spend on Aberfeldy, Teeling, Glen Deveron products.

On Chinese Valentine’s Day, all customers visiting GDF instore can enjoy a free gift upon entry and a lucky draw on any spend that day. Promotions on beauty products throughout the week from 1 August until 7 include: Buy 2 get -30% off on Nars and buy 2 get -25% on MAC, Shu Uemura and Urban Decay.

The Globuy x GDF event continues throughout August, with promotions including buy 2 get -20% off on watches, accessories and toys, and buy 2 get -30% off optics. Tom Ford pop-up store and Globuy x GDF pop-up stores are also key promotions to look forward to.

China Duty Free Group

CDF Member’s Shop is offering exclusive vouchers for Chinese Valentine’s Day and running a promotion on items across different price ranges. The vouchers offer a minimum of CNY40 off CNY800 spend and as high as CNY450 off CNY4,000 spend.

Promotional items for Chinese Valentine’s Day include the Casio G-Shock watch at CNY 679; Baby G CNY553; MCM wallet on chain CNY3,74; La Mer skincare set CNY1,280; YSL Black Opium perfume CNY664; Coach backpack CNY4,545; DeLonghi coffee machine CNY1,133 and Tom Ford Oud Wood perfume CNY1,730.

CDFG is also extending the offer to Hong Kong, where customers can shop online at CDF Beauty to enjoy buy 2 get extra -23% off and buy 3 get extra -30% off on selected beauty and perfume products. They include: Estée Lauder Re-Nutriv foundation; Givenchy loose powder; Bobbi Brown compact powder; Gucci lipstick and Armani Lip Maestro.

New members can receive e-vouchers of HK$70 off HK$599 spend, and HK$120 off HK$799 spend.

Other promotions at CDFG’s Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex include the upcoming ‘NONSTOPNARS’ pop-up store opening in August, and the grand opening of OTB’s first Brave Kid children’s wear store, featuring Diesel, Marni, Dsquared2, N°21 and MM6.

DFS 

DFS Beauty Event of the Year features the latest metaverse elements. From 1 August to 30 September, customers who spend over HK$1,500 (US$190) at DFS stores in Hong Kong are eligible for a mystery gift box and an NFT redemption code.

With any perfume purchase instore from 15 August to 30 September, customers can enjoy a free, personalised embroidered leather name tag. Pop-up makeup studios at the two T Galleria by DFS on Canton Road and Causeway Bay feature beauty advisors offering makeup services and advice.

The promotion in August features a wide variety of products from international beauty brands, including: Estée Lauder; La Mer; Lancôme, Armani Beauty; Clé de Peau; Clinique; YSL and La Prairie. A special livestream in partnership with Times DF on Viktor & Rolf was also held on 28 July to celebrate the opening of a Viktor & Rolf pop-up store in Hainan, with Chinese superstar Angelababy as special guest.

The Shilla Duty Free 

In July The Shilla Duty Free officially launched its direct delivery service to Chinese customers with Mainland addresses, marking the pilot of Shilla’s latest efforts to expand its audience in China.

Customers can follow a three-step approach to complete their shopping: (1) select the goods eligible for Mainland China delivery; (2) set departure airport as Jeju Airport and date as 2022/06/30 and order; (3) contacta Shilla representative on WeChat (ID: shilla) and confirm Shilla account/WeChat ID/shipping address.

The goods will be shipped every Wednesday and usually arrive within ten days. The brands currently on offer are Korean, including Sulwhasoo; Whoo; A.H.C.; Laneige; FCMM; MARKM and Metrocity. Shilla said that it will diversify its assortments in the upcoming months.

Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex (HTDF)

HTDF is offering -30% off all items, extra loyalty points, and special sales of up to -70% on selected products. On top of that, HTDF offers further promotions in partnership with China Everbright Bank, China Merchants Bank, and Agricultural Bank of China, and also accepts cash vouchers issued by the local government to boost consumption.

Flash sale items include Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum and eye cream set at CNY515; La Mer moisturizing cream 60ml CNY1459.28; L’Oréal Revitalift Filler eye cream CNY 172.25 and Gucci matte lipstick CNY175.44.

On fashion and accessories, HTDF is promoting Bally, Salvatore Ferragamo, Marni, Piaget and Zenith in store, with up to 6x loyalty points and surprise promotion upon purchase.
