INTERNATIONAL. InterBaires CEO Enrique Urioste, Scorpio Distributors Managing Director Stuart McGuire, King Power Duty Free Company (Thailand) Deputy Managing Director Susan Whelan, and Alpha Airports Group CEO and Executive Director Kevin Abbott and David King have been named The Moodie Report’s “˜People of the Year’ for 2004.

The findings are contained in a special edition of The Moodie Report PLUS, our popular series of in-depth features published in pdf format and distributed electronically to the 6,000-plus readers of The Moodie Report.

The recipients were those who The Moodie Report believes, by their deeds, attitudes and behaviour, particularly advanced the industry’s cause and standing in 2004.

Urioste gained recognition for the incredible transformation in InterBaires’ retail fortunes, his commitment to transparency of information and his humanity in driving the urgent fund-raising appeal on behalf of his long-time friend and colleague Pablo Clasen, tragically murdered late last year.

McGuire was singled out for his courage as the inspiration behind the Freddie McGuire Trust, a children’s accident prevention and relief fund formed in honour of his late baby son Freddie; as well as for the impressive rise of his distribution company Scorpio, which has become one of the industry’s most successful specialist brand representatives.

Susan Whelan, like Urioste, has been a champion of transparency and retail investment, and has played a pivotal role in the rapid emergence of King Power in Thailand as an increasingly world class retailer.

David King and Kevin Abbott gain recognition for their commitment to people, via the grandly ambitious employee incentive and recognition scheme Alpha Heroes, allied to the continued impressive resurgence of the retail-to-catering company that looked in such dire straits after intra-EU duty free abolition.

“We think the travel retail industry stands for more than just buying and selling brands and luxury items,” said Publisher and Editor Martin Moodie. “Our annual list is about recognizing those individuals who have stood out for both commercial and human qualities.”

The 2003 recipients were Dubai Duty Free Managing Director Colm McLoughlin; Gebr Heinemann Managing Director Harry Diehl (now Chairman of the Board); World Duty Free Director of Product Strategy and Development (now Harding Bros Director of Buying) Alyson Reilly and Nuance-Watson (HK) Managing Director Alessandra Piovesena.
