JAPAN. Japanese travellers entering the US from 26 October may be required to obtain a visa in advance, according to Travel Journal International Online.
TJI Online reports that travellers from countries participating in the US Visa Waiver Program (including Japan) will be required to present a machine-readable passport containing biometric data from 26 October at US ports of entry. Those without machine-readable passports must obtain a visa to enter the country.
Travellers holding a conventional passport issued before 25 October will not require a visa. However, the Japanese government will be incapable of issuing machine-readable passports containing biometric data until after April 2005. As a result, those with passports expiring prior to 26 October or those who applied for a passport on or after 26 October must obtain a visa.
Individuals who intend to enter the US for work purposes or to study must obtain a visa.
An application by proxy for an employment visa will no longer be permitted as each visa applicant must apply in person from 1 July, 2004.
