WATCHES & JEWELLERY: Unoaerre stakes its claim on the mid-upper market segment

ITALY. Innovative Italian designs combined with accessible price points are bringing in new inflight business for Unoaerre. The company’s worldwide exclusive duty free agent Alessandra Visconti, of Reflecta, has announced the first Asian listing with Japan Airlines (JAL).

Despite being one of the world’s largest manufacturers of gold jewellery, Unoaerre is still developing its own brand status in the middle-to-upper segment. Very well-known in Italy and Japan, and rapidly establishing a name for itself in the US, the company is beginning to grow its branded business through travel retail with 18 carat gold collections, both with and without diamonds.

JAL has listed a delicate 18 carat gold star pendant and chain, with a diamond finish on one side and shiny surface on the other. Retailing onboard at ¥23,000 (US$213), the necklace is presented in a compact window box.

The star design is one in a small collection of similar pieces available in yellow or white gold, including fresh interpretations of “evergreen” themes such as a heart, flowers, and crescent moon.

“The star pendant and chain has been listed on JAL since 1 October and the feedback has been very good,” said Visconti. “The airline has already re-ordered once and we are now shipping more pieces.”

Shown at TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes this year, together with the latest autumn/winter collections, reaction from buyers to the pendant collection was very positive. Said Visconti: “We are now in final negotiations with several other airlines.

“In travel retail we want to position Unoaerre jewellery as an approachable alternative to ready-to-wear and fashion accessories, offering consumers pieces which represent the everlasting value of gold, translated into the very best in Italian quality and design.”

Note: In 1926 Leopoldo Gori and Carlo Zucchi founded a company in a small hilltop town in Tuscany called Areaao. That company was to become Unoaerre. This gold colossus turns over 45 tonnes of gold into jewellery each year. Some 68% of Italians are believed to purchase a Unoaerre wedding ring.
