GERMANY. German electrical goods supplier Braun has achieved a 47% year-on-year sales increase in South Korean business for 2004. And the company has seen record sales for its Flex XP II shaver during the first month of listing onboard Korean Air.

The Flex XP II model 5775, which retails at US$119, was listed from March 1 in the inflight catalogue and has so far been “an absolute phenomenon”, according to Braun duty free agent Klaus Mellin.

“We’ve seen record sales in the first month with this shaver – it’s an absolute phenomenon. Sales are well above average.”

Business is also good elsewhere in South Korea, reported Mellin. “Our two top airline accounts are in Korea – Korean Air and Asiana,” he told The Moodie Report. “We’re also with two operators in Seoul Incheon Airport, KNTO and AK Duty Free, and we have over 50% market share in our category. Braun has a good standing in South Korea. Especially in demand at the airport are multi-voltage and travel oriented products such as shavers and rechargeable travel toothbrushes.”

The firm’s overall sales success in South Korea is even more notable, as Braun only began downtown duty free sales with Lotte in Seoul and Busan during 2004. Latest addition is Lotte World in another part of Seoul which started carrying Braun items earlier this year.

Mauritius is another growth area, said Mellin. “Braun will shortly set up two special display cabinets in the Duty Free Paradise store at Mauritius Airport which have kindly been provided by our Africa/Middle East office in Dubai. Business in Mauritius is growing very nicely,” he added.
