King Power Hong Kong and Aotea Souvenirs join forces in New Zealand – 16/05/06

A natural fit: Sunil Tuli and Peter Hanson shake hands on their agreement to expand into New Zealand’s downtown duty free business

NEW ZEALAND. King Power Group (Hong Kong) and Aotea Souvenirs New Zealand are to jointly develop a downtown duty free business in New Zealand.

The companies have enjoyed close links in the recent past, having bid in partnership for the duty free tender at New Zealand’s Wellington Airport and examined a similar opportunity at Sydney Airport in Australia.

Aotea runs downtown destination merchandise stores for tourists in several prime New Zealand locations, including Auckland, Christchurch, Rotorua and Queenstown. It will now open several off-airport duty free shopping facilities through its joint venture with King Power.

Aotea President Peter Hanson said: “Our business in New Zealand has focused on the traveller to New Zealand, and we offer an excellent shopping opportunity to them. It was a natural progression for us to enter the duty free market as an extension to our existing offer, and we are delighted with our association with King Power.”

Speaking during the TFWA Asia Pacific show in Singapore, King Power Travel Retail and Duty Free Managing Director Sunil Tuli said: “I have personally known Peter for many years, and was always keen to do business with Aotea, knowing the potential of both their customer base and their excellent locations.

“Peter is here with us in Singapore for the show, and we will have discussions with some of our partners and suppliers, as we expect to start the business shortly.”
