Michael Edwards lists over 5,700 fragrances in 24th edition of Fragrances of the World – 02/01/08

The 24th edition of Fragrances of the World lists over 5,700 fragrances

AUSTRALIA. International fragrance expert Michael Edwards has published the latest edition of his annual fragrance guidebook, titled Fragrances of the World, which lists over 5,700 fragrances.

Available from early January at www.fragrancesoftheworld.com, the 24th edition spans 196 pages and classifies fragrances into five olfactory “˜families’: Floral, Oriental, Woody, Fresh and Fougère. These are presented on a Fragrance Wheel, with the first four families divided into sub-groups. The Fougère family stands in the center of the wheel as it contains elements from the other families.

The first edition of the guidebook was published in 1983 and listed just 38 fragrances. From 2000 to 2007, 4177 new fragrances were launched, compared to 1484 in the period between 1992 and 1999. Listings include selective, niche, direct retail, “˜masstige’ mass market, limited edition and seasonal fragrances.

Fragrances of the World 2008 retails at US$190/€145/£102/A$195/NZ$240 and to the rest of the world at US$210.

Michael Edwards’s Fragrance Wheel is a classification system that categorizes fragrances into five olfactory families: Floral, Oriental, Woody, Fresh and Fougère

Edwards, an independent publisher, does not charge brands, perfumers or retailers for listing their fragrances and declines both sponsorship and advertising. Besides Fragrances of the World, he also publishes Perfume Legends: French Feminine Fragrances, in which perfumers talk about their creations and reveal their sources of inspiration.

Edwards has received accolades at the FiFi Awards, described as the Oscars of the international fragrance industry. The awards are presented annually by The Fragrance Foundation for excellence in product, packaging, marketing and technology.

In 2004, he won an award in the Technological Breakthrough category for www.fragrancesoftheworld.info, the online derivative of his guidebook. His second award was for the Scentsa Fragrance Finder, developed in collaboration with Crescent House Publishing and author and fragrance specialist Jan Moran. The instore programme* comprises a touch-screen monitor as well as a database of 6,000 scents, and allows users to search for information and select fragrances.

“With more than 500 new fragrances launched each year, the sheer number of choices is overwhelming. Scentsa solves the retailers’ biggest problem: customer confusion,” Moran explained. “The touch-screen application features current information on more than 6,000 fragrances. Scentsa makes any fragrance advisor an instant expert and instils customer confidence.”

The Moodie Report has three copies of the new edition to give away. Simply send an e-mail to Martin@TheMoodieReport.com marked ‘Michael Edwards Competition’ telling us the names of the five olfactory “˜families’. Closing date is 14 January.
