Bologna Airport to redevelop commercial offer amid ambitious terminal expansion plans – 28/04/08

ITALY. Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is working with London-based design consultancy Portland to create a retail strategy and commercial plan to maximise its non-aeronautical revenues potential.

The airport is increasing its terminal’s capacity from the current level of 4.3 million passengers to 10 million as part of an expansion strategy. The new commercial plan with Portland is a step towards accommodating the resulting growth in passengers.

Portland will review the layout and mix of the airport’s retail offer, as well as all passenger communications and branding, in order to enhance the passenger experience. It will also optimise existing and new commercial opportunities within the terminal.

With the new planning solution, Bologna Airport aims to accommodate the needs of passenger growth while delivering improved passenger circulation throughout the terminal.

Alan Thompson, Director of the project at Portland, is very familiar with the Italian transportation sector, having worked at Florence, Turin and Rome Fiumicino airports. He commented: “One of the main challenges will be to inject the true essence of Bologna into the airport – from graphic communications, tone of voice and materials to the retail mix and food offer.

“Bologna has a rich heritage and strong cultural tradition that provides us with a great palette to work with and which should go on to manifest itself within the customers’ airport experience,” he added.

Bologna Airport Director of Non Aviation Stefano Gardini said: “We have established a good relationship with Portland. Our goal is to increase the quality of services for our customers in terms of the retail offer, the terminal environment and to provide a great airport travel retail experience.”
