GERMANY. The Berlin airports of Schönefeld and Tegel handled 1.4 million passengers between them in January, a rise of +5.8% year-on-year. The number of aircraft movements dipped by -0.8% to 16,679.
At Schönefeld, passenger numbers hit 455,943, up by +9.9% on last January. At Tegel, there were 950,635 passengers, an increase of +3.9% year-on-year.
As previously reported, the new Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI) Airport will open in October 2011 on the site of Schönefeld, replacing the city’s existing airports.
Between 22 and 25 million passengers will use BBI initially, with a peak capacity planned of 40 million passengers a year.
There, around 150 units covering more than 20,000sq m will be leased to retailers, caterers and other service providers. Within this, about 120 units will be located airside, and about 30 units landside.
There will be around 3,000sq m dedicated to duty free/duty paid retailing, split between two walk-through outlets and two units in the pier areas. This will be operated by Gebr Heinemann, which manages the current retail concessions at the city’s airports.
Berlin’s airports handled 20.9 million passengers in 2009, down by -2% on 2008.
