FINLAND. Finnish fur design company Rosafox has embarked on a travel retail expansion expedition following successful showings at last year’s TFWA World Exhibition and the Middle East Exclusive fair during MEDFA.

Since 1992, Rosafox has built up an international reputation for its skilfully designed fashion accessories.

The main product of the company, established by fur designer Pirjo Kortelainen, is a triangular-shaped wool-silk shawl decorated with Finnish blue fox fur. In addition, the company produces a wide range of accessories, including a fox-fur tassel.

Synonymous with Finnish design, craftsmanship and modern production technology, the products have secured an impressive client list worldwide.
Rosafox shawls are made of natural materials and sold in more than 20 countries. More than 90% of production is exported outside Finland.

International expansion

To boost its export business, Rosafox is present at international trade fairs. The most important one is the Hong Kong Fashion & Fur Fair, which took place in February 2010.

In addition, the company believes TFWA World Exhibition is also important. Rosafox exhibited in Cannes for the first time in 2009 and is returning again this October for the 2010 edition.

“Rosafox is keen to respond to global market requirements. One of our main target markets is China. European luxury products are seeing an increasing demand, and Rosafox products are highly appreciated.

“Rosafox accessories are easy to hang and they do not take up too much space in a shop,” the firm continued, acknowledging the demands of the travel retail channel. “The classical and sophisticated Rosafox product is designed for women who appreciate quality and travel a lot. The [Middle East Exclusive] MEDFA exhibition in Dubai was a success for Rosafox,” it added.

Designer and businesswoman Pirjo Kortelainen

The owner and designer of Rosafox is Pirjo Kortelainen, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the fur and textile industry. Skilled in the design of fur materials, Kortelainen devised the idea for her triangular-shaped Rosafox shawl while studying industrial design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

The stylish shawl, made from silk and wool, has fur trimmings. The natural materials she chose were ideal for the cold Finnish climate, becoming an instant hit in her home country. Soon the new product became popular worldwide.

Rosafox products are designed and manufactured in Finland, and quality is said to be one of the main company values. The colour scheme and patterns of the wool and silk fabrics are created together with an Italian fabric producer, which designs the details to match the shawls. The fur material used in shawls is Finnish blue fox produced by a well-known local breeder who follows the strict quality requirements of Rosafox.

Noting colour preferences among different nationalities, Rosafox said: “The wide colour palette match many cultures: joyful shades and bold designs for colourful Asia, neutral and elegant colours for Europe. In Russia, the clients prefer both classical and glamour. The basis for colour palette comprises black and brown as well as grey, beige and camel shades. The contemporary rich colours are added every season according to fashion trends and the demands of our clients.”

Importance of accessories

Kortelainen makes sure she carefully follows the latest fashion trends, blending contemporary design as well as traditional and classic styles. In the last few years, the growing interest in accessories has been the most important factor for the firm, and Rosafox has started to produce a new range of fur decoration on other garments.

In the selection there are stoles, mufflers and collars, all made using Finnish blue fox fur. An additional accessory is the Rosafox fur tassel. Tassels will be all the rage in fashion circles next season, hanging off must-have bags from several top luxury goods brands.

“The environmentally-friendly trend is affecting the way people consume, and this is also influencing fashion with a move towards natural materials and styles,” noted Kortelainen.

The Rosafox production system is patented, which guarantees that the products are hard to copy, according to the firm. And, importantly for today’s busy lifestyles, the combination of silk and wool fabrics, as well as the natural fox fur used in all Rosafox shawls, means the products can be washed in water.
