Schiphol Airport introduces automated massage chair service

NETHERLANDS. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has launched a new massage service for passengers.

Massage-O-Matic design chairs, specially designed for Schiphol, have been installed at the Cone Bar in Lounge 2 beyond passport control. Travellers will be able to enjoy eight minutes of pressure-point massage, in line with the Shiatsu technique, for €4. The service is available 24 hours a day.

Massage chairs have been conspicuously absent at Schiphol – until now – despite the airport’s aim to provide travellers with comfort, service and a memorable experience.

“There are two reasons for that,” explained Schiphol Group Business Area Consumers Director Otto Ambagtsheer. “Privacy and design – those two needs had not been properly met. By adding the Massage-O-Matic to our existing wellness facilities – Back to Life and the XpresSpa – we are now able to offer travellers a full-fledged wellness and beauty programme.”

The Massage-O-Matic was developed by Wellness International’s Michiel Versprille and architect Hubert Crijns. Together, they came up with an elliptic shell for the massage chair, providing users with the privacy to really relax.

The provision of the new service is a result of research carried out by Schiphol to find out what facilities travellers might want for an enjoyable stay at the airport, 24 hours a day. In addition, the airport reviews reports and ideas by trend-watchers.

“We translate developments into practical investments,” said Ambagtsheer. “Research has revealed rising demand from travellers for services around personal care and well-being. The Massage-O-Matic is a response to that demand. It relaxes body and soul, reduces fatigue, and re-energises.”
