UAE. Dubai Duty Free today announced a +16% year-on-year rise in first-half sales to AED2.185 billion (US$607million).
Dubai Duty Free Managing Director Colm McLoughlin said: “We were pleased that 2010 began well for Dubai Duty Free as we have seen an increase in consumer spending across all categories, with average spend per departing passenger at US$47.”
Perfumes, which account for 14% of the retailer’s mix, held on to the top spot with sales of AED301 million (US$84 million) in the first half of the year, representing an +18% increase over the same period last year.
Sales of confectionery soared by +16% to AED175 million (US$49 million) while electronics gained +7% to AED160 million (US$44 million) accounting for 6% of total revenue. Gold retained its third position, posting an increase of +11% to AED234 million (US$65 million).
Other notable increases were seen in cosmetics, which rose by +26%; watches (an impressive +33%); delicatessen items (+15%); and household lines (+14%).
Departures duty free sales increased by +18% year-on-year while Arrivals and public access stores generated gains of +4% and +9%, respectively.
As part of its sponsorship of the Dubai Summer Surprises campaign, Dubai Duty Free is offering shoppers the chance to win AED175,000 worth of shopping vouchers over the seven-week promotion.
Those spending AED500 or more can enter a weekly draw for shopping vouchers worth AED25,000 with the draw taking place each Thursday.
