Tourvest honours Mandela with township home-building project

SOUTH AFRICA Tourvest Group has completed the building of ten low-cost homes in the township of Diepsloot today (20 July) in honour of Mandela Day – Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

The homes were built in consultation with community leaders and non-governmental organisation Afrika Tikkun, with 200 volunteers – including employees from Tourvest, 1time Airlines and Moyo Restaurant – helping in the project.

Afrika Tikkun provides education, health and social services to children and their families through centres of excellence in South African townships. Nelson Mandela is its Patron-In-Chief.

Tourvest Executive Director Khehla Mthembu said: “We see this as the most valuable contribution we can make to our partnership with Afrika Tikkun, in addition to our pledge of a R100,000 per year to the charity’s child and youth development centre in Diepsloot.

“We have invested considerable finances, manpower and logistics in the project and see it as a symbol of what South Africa can achieve when corporations and civil society get together to tackle important social problems. We had a lot of fun and were very humbled by the gratitude shown to us by the people of Diepsloot.”
