Juanda Airport prepares Indonesia’s biggest airport commercial tender

INDONESIA. Juanda International Airport in Surabaya is ready to announce what management claims is the country’s biggest-ever airport commercial tender, driven by the grand opening of the new Terminal 2.

In November 2013, the airport will showcase what Incheon Airport Consulting, which is advising on the project, describes as “a brand new airport concession offer created to add upgraded shopping and dining”. This offer, together with “skyrocketing” passenger numbers will bolster commercial revenues, it said.

The first phase of the commercial tender will be announced on 10 July followed soon after by the second phase. More detailed information will be available from next month.

South Korea’s Incheon Airport Consulting, which has been involved at Juanda International Airport since May 2012, said that the new facility will benefit from improved services, new concession facilities, surging passenger numbers and an improved economic environment.

Incheon Airport Consulting has created a concessions strategy to reflect what it described as the “˜Good Luck’ theme at Juanda International Airport.

Along with Jakarta to the west, Surabaya is one of two major economic centres on the highly populated Java Island.

Juanda International Airport General Manager Trikola Harjio said that the innovative retail concepts and pioneering core category-themed store layouts will maximise opportunities at the new terminal. Passenger spending will be bolstered by the strategic partnership with Incheon Airport Consulting, Harjio added.

The new terminal building is designed to provide a modern atmosphere and an exciting new experience for passengers, Harjio continued. It will feature wide-open terminal space, a natural lighting roof and such passenger-focused conveniences as a shower room and entertainment facilities.

Summarising the forthcoming opportunity, Incheon Airport Consulting noted five key points:

1. Surabaya is the air transportation hub of East Java
2. It has been showing a rapid increase in passenger traffic (average year-on-year +14%)
3. Structural renovation will increase passenger dwell time
4. A new, themed walk-through type layout will maximise footfall & conversion
5. The consumer proposition will be based on market-oriented commercial planning by Incheon Airport Consulting

Speaking at the Airport Marketing Forum last month, AP1 (Angkasa Pura Airports, the state-owned airport company) President Tommy Soetomo said that passenger traffic at Juanda Airport reached 16.2 million in 2012, driven by a +12.76% increase in domestic passengers and a +23.27% rise in international passengers year-on-year. In the next five years, passenger traffic will almost double to around 30 million, he said.

More details to follow soon.
