Craft of the ages: The Glenturret launches new range with striking fresh visual identity

The Glenturret, the single malt Scotch whisky produced at Scotland’s oldest working distillery, has launched a new range, together with a fresh visual identity.

The range (www.TheGlenturret.com) is the first to be created by the distiller’s new owner, Glenturret Holding, a joint venture between luxury goods company Lalique Group and Swiss entrepreneur Hansjörg Wyss (Lalique’s second-largest shareholder).

A hidden gem no longer

It’s soft, elegant and the kind of whisky that just screams nightcap like a New York pedestrian screams “Taxi!”

Crafted by highly-respected Master Blender Bob Dalgarno (who spent 30 years at The Macallan), The Glenturret’s new range features four core expressions: Triple Wood, 10 years old Peat Smoked, 12 years old and 15 years old, as well as the 25 and 30 years old, which are described as extremely scarce releases, limited to just 204 and 750 bottles, respectively.

The new Glenturret range will be available at select hotels, restaurants, bars and retailers across several markets including the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, China and Taiwan.

The exclusive distribution rights for The Glenturret in travel retail and the UK domestic market have been secured by London-based Axiom Brands.

The Glenturret Managing Director John Laurie said: “We are very excited to be launching The Glenturret into global travel retail in May 2021.The channel is very well suited to our overall marketing trinity approach of ‘Provenance, Prowess and Passion’. We have a very focused market strategy linking into our domestic market launches which we are excited to share with the global partners in travel retail.

“The core areas of our support will focus on staff engagement, tasting with global consumers and engaging activations in our key airports around the world. We very much value the channel and we are keen as part of the core range to support this with a global travel retail exclusive in May 2021.”

Making a statement: The premier limited-edition whiskies in the new range from The Glenturret

The Glenturret Distillery Manager Ian Renwick said: “Having Bob Dalgarno on board is a recognition of the scale of our ambition and a testament to our transformative work over the past eight months. Throughout the process, from distillation through to maturation, we have been working closely together every day with Bob and our team. We cannot wait to share the new expressions with the world.”

The Moodie Davitt Report Chairman Martin Moodie took part in a virtual tasting of the new range last week. Look out for his report, coming soon.

The new look for the brand for The Glenturret honours the provenance of the distillery, which is located in the heart of Crieff, a market town in the Perth and Kinross area.

The picturesque setting for The Glenturret Distillery, claimed to be the oldest in Scotland

All expressions are presented in a new bottle, which has been designed to be “distinctive within the world of single malt”. The bottle has a rectangular profile, broad shoulder, crafted detail and what The Glenturret describes as a “reassuring weight”.

The Glenturret crest, inspired by the original Murray family coat of arms, features on the new packaging, as it will in all communications and future bottlings. The Murray family crest was a striking azure in colour and included three silver stars, the Scottish flag, a knight’s breast plate and crested helmet entwined with an olive branch.

The Glenturret Distillery Manager Ian Renwick: “We cannot wait to share the new expressions with the world.”

The Murray family founded The Glenturret Distillery (the first record of The Glenturret can be found in a rental document dating back to 1763) and has played a key role in the journey of The Glenturret over the past 250 years.

The Glenturret retains close ties with the Murray family. The distiller said it prides itself on its family-oriented culture with the vast majority of the 32-strong staff being local.

Laurie said: “We produce small batches of the finest single malt by hand and heart. Our dedication to very slow distillation in our hand-beaten copper stills reflects the time-honoured skills of our forefathers and the physical limits of a small traditional distillery. There is no automation, no big volumes, only simple distilling tasks completed by hand in their own good time.”

The range is also available online at www.theglenturret.com.

The Glenturret was a craft spirit long before the term became popular in recent years. Since 1763, in fact.
