CHINA. In disappointing news for the Hainan offshore duty free sector, Haikou stores run by China Duty Free Group, GDF Plaza and Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS Group have had to close again today (17 August) due to the COVID-19 outbreak on the island.
As reported, they all reopened yesterday after being forced to first shut their offline operations on 8 August before being allowed to reopen the next day but then closing again on 10 August. The frustrating pattern is a result of authorities continuing to battle the latest outbreak.
New Hainan reported yesterday that three new locally transmitted cases had been confirmed in Haikou, all from the same family. Since 4 August, 29 new infections have been found in the city, including 24 confirmed cases and 5 asymptomatic infections {New Hainan is owned by Hainan Hinews Media Co, The Moodie Davitt Report’s strategic communications partner in the province}.
Stores in Sanya run by China Duty Free Group (Haitang Bay), CNSC and HTDF remain shut. The CNSC and HTDF stores closed on 4 August and the vast China Duty Free Group complex a day later.
