Zero + Zero makes Zero – The critical COVID numbers that confirm likely Sanya duty free store reopening

Hopes are high that Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex in Sanya will reopen in coming days, along with CNSC, also in the city, and CDF Mall in Haitang Bay

CHINA. For the first day since 31 July, no new COVID-19 infections nor asymptomatic cases were reported in Hainan province yesterday.

The breakthrough figures from the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China offer critical affirmation of the local authorities’s successful fight to curb the outbreak which began on 1 August. The crisis has devastated the island’s tourism and travel retail sectors.

As we have reported, all now seems set for a prompt reopening of the closed duty free stores in Haitang Bay (China Duty Free Group’s Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex and CDF Mall), and Sanya City (CNSC and Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex), which have been closed since early August.

With some areas of Sanya still under temporary static management, however, there will be caution around any reopening. One senior source suggested it might be next week before the stores recommence trading.

As reported, the authorities have been racing against time to eradicate the COVID outbreak which began in early August to kick start the island province’s all-important tourism and duty free sectors before the Golden Week holidays at the beginning of October. Hainan offshore duty free retailers would normally expect booming visitor numbers and sales from the last week of September.

The stores in Haikou run by China Duty Free Group, GDF Plaza and Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS, have been trading since 28 August after being forced to close on several occasions due to the crisis centered in Sanya.
