US beauty giant The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has rolled out a pioneering AI-powered app designed to make applying makeup easier for the visually impaired.
A first of its kind, the Voice-Enabled Makeup Assistant (VMA) features smart mirror technology powered by ELC’s augmented reality and artificial intelligence capabilities and was developed using machine learning.
This app is equipped with voice instruction technologies to assist the user in applying makeup. It also gives feedback and tips on the correct way of putting on lipstick, eyeshadow or foundation.
The tool also analyses if the makeup was evenly applied on the user’s face and assesses the uniformity and boundaries of application and coverage. It tells the user if any part of the face needs touch-ups.
The Estée Lauder Companies Chief Information Officer Michael Smith said the company is thrilled to share this technology with millions of visually impaired people to help them experience applying makeup independently. “Technology is a powerful tool to drive inclusion and we are delighted to be first to market with this pioneering app,” he commented.
The Estée Lauder Companies UK and Ireland Executive Director, Corporate Cultural Relevancy and Inclusion and Diversity Monica Rastogi said this breakthrough allows the company to play its part in creating an inclusive beauty industry. “The launch of our Voice-Enabled Makeup Assistant is an important step in our journey towards makeup accessibility for all by removing barriers to engaging with beauty products and services.”
The launch is the first iteration of the VMA App, which will be continuously optimised and improved over the coming months. The company said its future versions will offer additional services to introduce new features, including a selection of different looks and makeup education tools.
The VMA App is first being launched via the Apple App Store in the UK and esteelauder.co.uk. The Estée Lauder brand in the UK will be the first to adopt and promote this technology.
It is expected to be available on the Google Play store within the year and across other ELC brands and markets in the near future. ✈
