AUSTRIA. Popular Berlin food concept Haferkater opened its first outlet outside Germany today at Vienna Airport, in partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail. The restaurant is located in Terminal 1 departures, close to check-in.
The store offers the brand’s popular range of porridge alongside oat rice bowls, breads, speciality coffees and more.
The outlet was inaugurated by Haferkater CEO Leandro Burguete, Lagardère Travel Retail Austria CEO Ursula Fürnhammer and Vienna Airport Joint CEO and COO Julian Jäger.
Julian Jäger said: “There is now an even larger range of culinary delights at the airport. I am very pleased that we are the location of the first international expansion by Haferkater. Passengers, guests and employees will thus have an even greater exclusive offering of brands at their disposal, as well as healthy snacks and meals. Thanks to this new store, we are also further expanding our good cooperation with our longstanding catering partner Lagardère Travel Retail.”

Leandro Burguete said: “We are pleased with this next step and our expansion to Austria, more precisely to Vienna Airport, where people from all around the world travel to. We have an experienced partner on board, namely Lagardére Travel Retail, which will manage our first store in Vienna leveraging its extensive operational expertise.”
Ursula Fürnhammer added: “Our collaboration with Haferkater shows our increasing focus on an enhanced offering of vegan and vegetarian foods. Thanks to opening times starting in the early hours of the morning, we have created an improved variety of breakfasts for passengers departing from Terminal 1. We very much look forward to the cooperation with Haferkater. Together with Vienna Airport, we are laying the foundation for an even greater culinary diversity.”
Haferkater was founded ten years ago by three childhood friends, Leandro Burguete, Anna Schubert and Levin Siert. They created the first Haferkater coffeehouse from a former kebab stand, with the brand motto ‘Haferkater is shaking up the breakfast market’.
A year after launch, the partners won the German Food Startup Award and now manage 24 stores in 17 German cities.

Each morning oats are freshly flaked in the shop’s grain crusher, then roasted and cooked only with water and salt. The ‘porridge to go concept is particularly tailored to travellers, said Haferkater, offering a healthy and enjoyable alternative to conventional snacks. Variety added by including seasonal specials on the menu.
Popular dishes include the ‘Powerkater’ featuring dates, linseeds and apple, the ‘Waldbeerkater’ with compote and chocolate drops and the high protein ‘Proteinkater’. Sustainability is built into the concept: Haferkater only uses compostable packaging and promotes reusable goods while the product line primarily consists of organic products. ✈
